The Milford Recreation Department announces its 2017 Spring Learn to Swim program.

September 23, 2017 - Fall Learn to Swim Registration Opens! (9AM)

October 3, 2017 - Fall Learn to Swim Registration Closed.

Fall Learn to Swim - October 8 - November 12. (Sundays Only - 6 weeks)

Classes at Joseph A. Foran High School Natatorium.


The cost is $50 per session per child. 


General Information
Pre-School Level 1: (Ages 4-5 yr.) Introduction to water skills
This class is designed for the young independent participant who are comfortable in the water. Participants will learn to enter and exit water safely, submerge nose and eyes, explore alternating arm and leg movements on front and back, kick, float, bob and follow basic water safety. Perfect for the 5 year old beginner.
Pre-requisite: Intro to water with parent recommended

Level 2:
This class is designed to give opportunities for success through fundamental skills in the water. Participants will learn to enter by stepping or jumping off side, exit safely using ladder and side, fully submerge and holding breath, open eyes underwater, float on front and back, glide on front and back, roll, tread water.
Pre-requisite: Pre-school level one recommended or placement at evaluation

Level 3:
This class is designed to build on skills learned in level 2 through guided practice. Participants will also learn to jump into deep water from side, dive from kneeling or standing, float for 30 seconds, submerge and retrieve an object, bob with head fully submerged, perform front and back glides. Participants will work on skills like front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, flutter kick, dolphin kick and breaststroke kick. Also, streamlined push offs on front and back, changing from horizontal to vertical position in the water.
Pre-requisite: Successful Evaluation Completion of level 2 or placement at evaluation

Level 4:
This class is designed to build on confidence in skills learned in levels 2-3 and improve with the introduction of other aquatic skills. Participants will learn to swim underwater, perform surface dives, tread water with different kicks, front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, sidestroke. Participants will also learn, front and back push offs in streamlined position, and open turns.
Pre-requisite: Successful Evaluation Completion of level 3 or placement at evaluation

Level 5:
This class is designed to provide instruction for further coordination and refinement of strokes. Participants will learn to tread for 5 minutes and perform a tuck and spike surface dives. Participants will swim full length (25 yards) of all strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, butterfly). Participants will also learn front and back flip turns.
Pre-requisite: Successful Evaluation Completion of level 4 or placement at evaluation

Level 6:
This class is focused on refining stroke techniques so that participants swim them with ease and efficiency for longer distances. Participants will swim multiple laps of each stroke. Ultimately participants will be able to swim 500 yards (20 laps) continuously.
Pre-requisite: Successful Evaluation Completion of level 5 or placement at evaluation

Teen Swim Lessons (Ages 12-17)
Beginner Class
This class is designed for the teen just starting out with swim lessons and is seeking to learn the basics. The lessons will take kids from beginner level 1 through level 2 with peers their age. This small group setting will provide a comfortable level of instruction for teens wanting to learn how to float, tread water, and perform basic swim skills for safety.

Fridays:
6 weeks


Teen Swim Lessons (Ages 12-17)
Intermediate Class
This class is designed for those teens comfortable in the water yet seeking to learn swim skills and beginning strokes with peers their age. The class will take teens through level 3 and 4. A small group setting will provide a comfortable level of instruction for teens focusing on technique and mechanics of strokes and continue to improve stroke development. Front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke.
Pre-requisite: Completion of swim lessons through level 2 and able to swim one 25 yards length of pool.
Fridays:
6 weeks

Adult Swim Lessons (18+)
Beginner
This class is designed for adults with minimal or no swimming experience who desire to learn basic swimming skills and basic water safety in and around water. This small group setting will provide instruction from beginning level 1 through level 2, learning basic skills such as putting nose and eyes under water, fully submerging, floating on front and back, front and back glides, combined arm and leg action, treading water, and rotary breathing.
