Camp Happiness is a Milford Recreation camp for Milford children with special needs. The children range in age between 4 and 12 years old. The camp is a day camp located at Foran High School. It runs for five weeks during the summer months of July and August. Children qualify to attend camp if they have an IEP through the city of Milford.
The camp is divided into 6 groups, and the groups are formed with children of the same age. The needs of the children range from developmental delays, speech and language delays, social/emotional delays, and multi handicapping conditions.
The camp is a structured 6 period day with the following periods, Music, Arts & Crafts, Physical Education, Instructional swim, a “Free swim”, and a Create your own period. Musicians, Jugglers, and other Entertainers visit the camp for the children. We also have theme days and awards given to all the campers. Many of the special performers and trips and activities we develop for the camp need financial assistance from outside organizations due to budgetary restraints
Since 1965 the camp has been in existence. It has evolved from a camp of 20 - 30 children to a camp of 100 - 120 each summer. There are 40 paid staff members who are high school students, college students and some teachers. The camp has a full time nurse on duty. We also have a behavioral management program in place from day one.
Camp Happiness motto is Come On~ Get Happy! We try to give children with special needs an opportunity to have a positive experience at a day camp environment that they may not otherwise get elsewhere.
